Ice Out Up Date Low Down.As of noon today, the ice out status on Lake Vermilion is "out to not out".
Portions of the lake are ice free.
Larger bays are still ice covered while some smaller and shallower bays are open. A 100% ice free Lake Vermilion for Saturday morning is still anyone's call.
Here's a fresh photo looking southeast across Wakemup Bay from the entrance to Black Bay. (Note the remaining ice flow in the distance.)
Update:
The Fishing Opener on Lake Vermilion saw ice conditions that varied depending upon your location. Smaller bays are open but the larger lake bays are still ice covered.
Here's a look at the de-icing process from a polar orbiting satellite.
The April 30th image shows a nearly 100% ice covered lake on a day when historically, Lake Vermilion is ice-free.
The lower image, taken just 10 days later and 1 day before the Fishing Opener, reveals that there is remaining ice on the lakes' larger bays.
